SJP shocks the world in £4.50 dress

Designer fashion on offer for a fiverWhile her Sex and the City alter-ego Carrie Bradshaw would never be seen dead in anything less than a gorgeous pair of Manolos and a designer dress, actress Sarah Jessica Parker has stepped out in a frock which costs less than a fiver.

The 43-year-old actress has been won over by the low-price fashion offer and announced she is supporting the Steve & Barry shops.

She wore a blue dress from the shop at a recent premiere in New York and said that she had designed a range for the retailer.

It includes jeans, dresses, jackets, jumpers, shoes and lingerie and every item reportedly sells for less that £4.50.

Sarah Jessica Parker explained: "I had never heard of Steve & Barry’’s, and I didn”t know anyone who had. But I loved their manifesto and ideas."

Other celebrities who have previously promoted the shop include tennis player Venus Williams and surfer Laird Hamilton.

So far, the chain boasts 264 shops in 37 US states. The owners claim not to use sweatshops and instead rely on "razor-thin" profits and a low advertising spend.

Heiress offers designer clothes in special fashion auction

April 30, 2008 by The Editor

Designer fashions on offerOne of the country’’s most fashionable women is offering hundreds of items of designer clothing over the internet.

While female consumers will be able to grab a fashion bargain, the sale of the 260 lots previously owned by the heiress Daphne Guiness is also expected to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Ms Guinness, who has previously worked as a model, fashion designer and artist, has put some of her favourite dresses and accessories up for offer, including pieces by Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Dolce and Gabbana and Chanel.

"Anyone purchasing pieces in this sale will be able to pick up top designer-wear at a fraction of the original purchase cost," explained Kerry Taylor of fashion auctioneers Kerry Taylor Auctions, which helped set up the special event with eBay.

"Tom Ford believes Daphne to be one of, if not, the most stylish woman living and I would tend to agree."

As well as being an heiress to the Guinness brewing company, the 40-year-old also received a £20 million settlement from her 1999 divorce from the Greek shipping heir Syyros Niarchos. ADNFCR-1460-ID-18574545-ADNFCR

Men outpace women as online shopping enthusiasts

April 28, 2008 by The Editor

Men turning to internet for retail offersBritish men are now spending more time shopping over the internet than their female counterparts, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by the management consultancy firm Accenture found that men have grown to embrace online shopping, with 56 per cent now preferring to buy a variety of goods this way rather than on the high street.

This is largely thanks to online retailers now targeting this part of the market, with a number of new websites launched allowing quick and easy access to all the latest fashion offers.

"Shopping for fashion online is a new experience for many men – they have to be educated to convert to it and, unlike women, the media hasn”t been busy bombarding them with ”the new look” on a weekly basis," Ali Khan, founder of menalamode.com, explained to the Independent.

"Lots of retailers have been reluctant to cater online to the male fashion customer when women have been so ready to buy online. But it’’s changing."

The findings come soon after a separate study by market researchers Nielsen found that 36 per cent of Britons with access to the internet have purchased clothes or accessories online in at least one occasion during the final quarter of 2007, more than double the number who did so in the same period of the previous year.

Affordable fashion on the rise as shoppers get savvy

April 24, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under For Men, For Women

Shoppers going for value fashionGrowing numbers of British consumers are looking to take advantage of high street offers as they try to reign in their spending yet keep on top of the latest fashions, new figures from retailers suggest.

According to the latest statistics released by the ”value fashion” chain store Primark, its sales rise by 25 per cent to £899 million over the previous six months.

This means the store now has a ten per cent share of the UK clothing market by sales volume, putting it behind Marks and Spencer, which dominates with a 12 per cent share.

In addition to shoppers comparing high street fashion prices and looking for the best value offers, this trend towards the cheaper end of the market has been attributed to the rise of ”disposable” fashion.

A spokesman for the retail analysts Mintel explained: "Value clothing has become a lot more accessible and more importantly acceptable, especially with the growth of Primark and the supermarkets.

"For many the draw of the ”buy today, wear tonight, forget next week” outfit is just irresistible."

Tommy Hilfiger launches new fashion and music channel

Beyonce to star on new fashion channelUS designer Tommy Hilfiger has launched its own online music channel in the UK as it attempts to offer Brits a link between the fashion industry and culture in general.

With a significant number of people cutting back on personal spending, the label believes that shoppers will increasingly compare offers and may move away from high-end brands in favour of more affordable items.

“Luxury brands with very high price points are starting to feel the pressure,” Mr Hilfiger told the Times.

“People are not buying $2,000 (£1,013) handbags, but they are certainly buying affordable, wearable clothes.”

However, the company is confident that it can still forge a relationship with consumers and, as such, it has launched its new channel in partnership with SonyBMG.

The channel will offer viewers the chance to see exclusive concerts by artists such as Beyonce and Wyclef Jean over the coming months, though shoppers will not be able to get access to the label’’s latest deals through this medium. ADNFCR-1460-ID-18558058-ADNFCR

Women Brits have ”Sex and the City-style” wardrobes

April 16, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under For Women, House insurance

Looking good costs money Women have been warned of the importance of sticking to a strict budget and shopping around for the best offers when it comes to keeping their wardrobe up-to-date.

With the movie version of the hit TV show Sex and the City due to hit the nation’’s screens in the next few weeks, it has been calculated that the Manhattan foursome spend at least £10,572 a year on clothes, shoes and accessories.

In comparison, the average British woman splashes out around £68 a month, or £816 a year on her wardrobe, with 50 per cent of those polled by MORE TH>N claiming that their wardrobe was worth less than £1,000.

However, with studies showing the true value of an average single person’’s wardrobe to be nearer to £2,500, clearly many are underestimating the amount of money that have spent - a fact reflected in a general reluctance to insure against this.

Annette Lepper from the insurance firm commented: "Though British women may not have the means to build a Sex and the City style wardrobe, during their lifetimes many will have built up closets with significant monetary values problems arise when people don”t stop to think about the combined value of all their purchases, or accurately account for their total worth." Stella McCartney launches new eco-fashion range in London

April 15, 2008 by The Editor

New Stella McCartney range set for London Top designer Stella McCartney has announced that her organic fashion range will soon be on offer in the UK.

Until now her eco-fashion range was only available in Barney’’s New York, the famous department store for which she designed it.

However, the daughter of Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney now plans to make the designs available in a store in London, thereby giving consumers in the UK the chance to buy and wear the best contemporary eco-friendly fashion designs.

Speaking to WWD, Ms McCartney said: "I always wanted to go beyond the one store. Eco-friendly fashion is something I”ve always felt strongly about.

"It would be weird if we made it completely alien to what we do on a daily basis. You should treat the design process and luxury and quality element of the product in exactly the same way. You shouldn”t have to sacrifice your style."

The news comes as fashion-lovers across the country have been invited to submit their favourite Little Black Dress to the Fashion and Textile Museum in London to include in a new exhibition on the garment.

Insoles afford women a pain-free day

April 2, 2008 by The Editor

Sore feet may be a thing of the pastWearing insoles in high heels may be one way of ensuring a pain-free day, women are being told.

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has designed insoles suitable for stilettos and are made to shift weight away from the ball of the foot to the heel. This is expected to improve posture and comfort.

According to M&S, a woman who wears a pair of shoes with two-inch heels experiences 64 per cent more pressure in her forefoot than in an ordinary pair of flat shoes.

Wearing the so-called Insolia inserts reduces this to 22 per cent, reports the Daily Mail.

Celebrity osteopath and acupuncturist Garry Trainer told the paper: "The ideal is always going to be an absolutely flat sole - or at the most a raised heel of half an inch.

"But pushing the weight back rather than forwards is an improvement as it makes the centre of gravity more stable."

The M&S Spring 08 collection will include 35 different shoe designs with the new insoles.

According to Italian urologist Dr Maria Cerruto, high heels improve pelvic floor muscles, which can have a positive impact on a woman’s sex life. ADNFCR-1460-ID-18534543-ADNFCR

Fashionable bags may be health risk, experts warn

March 25, 2008 by The Editor

Staying in fashion could be painful, experts warn British women may be putting their well-being at risk by copying one of the latest fashion trends, health experts have warned.

Over recent months large bags, often bearing designer labels, have become highly fashionable as British women follow the fashion trends set by the likes of Katie Holmes, Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria.

However, despite looking good, many are putting themselves at risk permanent damage, osteopath and acupuncturist Garry Trainer has warned.

“If a heavy bag is carried constantly on the same shoulder then it can compress the muscles on one side while stretching the muscles on the other,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Ideally weight should be carried across both shoulders close to the body.”

It is now believed that the average British woman carries around 5.2lb worth of possessions in her handbag - twice the weight carried by their mothers.
