Current insurance offer from Tesco Pet Insurance

Tesco Pet Insurance is offering a new deal for holidaymakers looking to take their pets with them when they go away this summer.

For less than a pound extra on the normal monthly pet insurance premium, overseas coverage is available, with up to £60 excess. Extra cover is available for around an extra five pounds a month.

Allan Burns, head of Tesco Pet Insurance says: "We”ve provided this extra because, being a nation of animal lovers, our customers have told us they would like to share their holiday experience with their dogs."

The extra insurance is designed to contribute towards partial quarantine costs and any additional costs up to around £300. Tesco advises customers to ensure their pets and micro-chipped and fully vaccinated, while holidaymakers should also check the specific import regulations of whichever country they are visiting, to avoid last-minute complications.

The number of Britons opting to take their pets abroad with them is on a steady rise at the moment, with nearly 50,000 PETS passports given out last year alone. With many households considering their pet to be an additional member of the family, it’’s perhaps unsurprising that fewer people are willing to leave them behind.

M&S achieves awards clean sweep for insurance products

Mark’’s & Spencer has scooped a number of top prizes for its finance products at an industry awards ceremony.

All of the products offered through the M&S insurance portfolio were awarded five stars by the independent financial services benchmarking company Defaqto.

This includes its annual and single trip travel insurance offers, home buildinhs and contents cover, car insurance and pet insurance.

Commenting on this latest recognition, Brendan Cook, M&S Money’’s chief executive said: “This rating is a great indication of the standard of insurance available from M&S Money. We are proud of the policies we have put together in conjunction with our insurance partners and feel that they are some of the best available in the current market.”

The awards come after Defaqto compared around 97 per cent of all the financial services products currently on offer in the UK, with only a small proportion of these gaining a five star rating - highlighting the importance of shopping around for the best deal.

Pet insurers set for busy Easter

Pet insurance providers have reported that they are preparing for a busy time this Easter as a worrying number of dogs fall seriously ill after eating unguarded Easter eggs.

Owners have been warned that theobromine, a naturally-occurring stimulant found in chocolate is highly poisonous to all types of dogs, with just 240g of dark chocolate sufficient to kill a German Shepherd.

The head of online pet insurance provider Pet Guard, Andrew Selby, has stated that such a fact is likely to be unknown to many owners and as such many animals will need emergency veterinary care.

"We’re expecting a spike in claims this Easter as dogs pounce on unguarded chocolate. We always advise our customers to keep chocolate out of reach of dogs, but we’re also realistic and appreciate that accidents can happen," he noted.

"Speaking from experience, it’s important to consult your vet immediately if you think it may have ingested a significant quantity of chocolate."

Given this added seasonal risk, pet owners have been advised to check the provisions of their policies and take out additional cover if necessary.
