PS3 outselling Xbox in Europe, Sony confirms
May 8, 2008 by The Editor
Sony has reported that its Playstation 3 console has outsold the Xbox 360 offered by rival Microsoft across Europe.
According to the latest figures released by the manufacturer, more than five million PS3s have so far been sold across the continent, despite the product coming with a larger price tag than the Xbox.
In comparison to the £159 charged by Microsoft, Sony is offering its product for at least £299, though it is believed that its popularity has been boosted by the wealth of top games titles available.
In addition, experts have pointed out that the PS3 is aimed at the general gaming market, including females and families, while the Xbox 360 is aimed largely at adult male gamers.
Sony’’s David Reeves told the European PlayStation event in London: "The numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand.
"We have sold more PlayStation 3s throughout Europe than Xbox 360 even though they launched 16 months before us."
However, both the sales figures for both products are still some way behind those for Nintendo’’s console, the Wii.

Year’’s biggest games get simultaneous UK launch

Two of the most eagerly-awaited titles have finally been given their official UK launch.
Playstation 3 and Xbox 260 owners will now be able to pick up and play Grand Theft Auto 4, the latest title in the controversial, yet hugely successful series of games which sees players navigate an in-depth Liberty City participating in all manner of crimes.
According to experts, the makers of the game, Rockstar, are particularly targeting ”traditional” gamers, namely young males, with this new product and millions are expected to take advantage of a spate of offers from retailers over the coming weeks.
Commenting on this new game, Neil Long, director of MCV magazine, told the BBC: "I think primarily it will push hardware sales up through the roof on the two formats it’’s on. Microsoft have been very keen to own this launch in terms of putting a lot of marketing out there and cutting the price of Xbox, Microsoft’’s message is get GTA IV for £200."
At the same time, Nintendo have also launched their Wii Gym game, aimed more at the family market and offering gamers the chance to keep fit while they play.
Among the exercises allowed through the new game are yoga and hula hoop spinning, both of which are done through a special board which is added on to the Wii console and comes with a price tag of around £70.

Rumours are circulating that Nintendo may soon unveil a new version of its popular DS handheld system.
Since being released in the UK, sales of the portable console have been consistently strong, with the hardware supported by a number of classic games.
Now the president of Enterbrain, the company behind the games giant’’s magazine Famitsu, has stated that Nintendo could be uncovering its latest DS as soon as July.
Hirokazu Hamamura told MCV: "Nintendo might be readying to show off the third iteration of its handheld system later this year during the E3 Media and Business Summit."
The remark comes soon after Nintendo chief Reggie Fils-Aime announced that his company is planning on issuing some "fantastic news" at the forthcoming E3 exhibition in Los Angeles, though it is yet to confirm or deny these latest rumours.
At the same time Nintendo have been given a further boost with the news that Mario Kart has overtaken Gran Turismo 5 to top the UK all-format games chart.
According to recently-published statistics, titles featuring Mario account for 21 per cent of all games sold for Nintendo’’s Wii console.

Nintendo Wii owners will soon be able to access a wide range of BBC programmes after the broadcaster announced plans to introduce its iPlayer to the console.
Since its online introduction only a matter of months ago, the iPlayer has proved to be hugely popular with the public, allowing viewers to watch their favourite shows at their convenience.
In a statement, the BBC confirmed: "The BBC’’s iPlayer video service will soon be available via the Nintendo Wii.
"The video download and streaming service that lets people catch up with BBC programmes will soon be a channel on the hugely popular game console.
"Early versions of the service will be available from April 9th but more polished software will be released as the service is developed."
The iPlayer launch comes ahead of that of the Wii Gym game, supplies of which have already sold out, despite it not being available yet in the UK.

UK launch date of Rock Band game announced
April 8, 2008 by The Editor
Electronic Arts has announced the launch date for its eagerly-anticipated Rock Band game.
Following on from the phenomenal success of the Guitar Hero series across all console platforms, the games developer has confirmed that its new rock band simulator will be made available to UK gamers on May 23rd.
However, this date will only see the launch of the Xbox 360 version, while Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 owners will be required to wait until the summer before they can get their hands on the game.
As yet, Electronic Arts has not confirmed an RRP for Rock Band, though gaming industry experts predict that the price will be high as it will only be made available in packages containing the game itself as well as drum kit and guitar peripherals.
According to statistics compiled by GI.biz, the game has already sold over six million units since being launched in the United States in November and Electronic Arts is expected to benefit further with the release of new song packs at the end of May.

New price offers push Xbox sales skyward
March 20, 2008 by The Editor
Sales of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 have soared by around 40 per cent on the back of the company’s recent round of price cuts, industry figures show.
Just last week the software giant announced that it is to offer its console for £159, with the Elite model costing just £259, a move believed to have been made in anticipation of the launch of a new bundle including a Playstation 3 and the game Gran Turismo 5 by rivals Sony.
However, according to Chart-Track director, it remains to be seen whether Microsoft can maintain this momentum.
"Now it’s a question of Easter," Dorian Bloch told the website GamesIndustry.com.
"The real litmus test will be over the next three to four weeks. It is too early to read too much into it at this stage."
The latest chart figures also show that UK consumers are still keen to pick up a gaming bargain, with a host of new offers making the Playstation 2 the most popular option for many buyers just prior to Easter.

Pre order the Wii fit
March 17, 2008 by The Editor

The online electrical store Dixons are taking pre-orders for the much talked about Wii Fit Gym. This game is tipped to be Nintendo’s biggest selling game of the year. Wii Fit comes bundled with the Wii balance board, a wireless pressure sensitive device that looks like a weighing scales. The balance board will assess a player’s weight and height so that games such as yoga, football and downhill skiing can be specially tailored to the specific user, all of which require significant levels of physical exertion.
According to some health experts, the Wii Fit will effectively tackle the ‘couch potato’ culture of many Brits and encourage them to get into shape as it allows them to exercise in the comfort and privacy of their own homes rather than in a gym alongside other people.
You can pre-order online now from Dixons website. The Wii Fit will be released on 25th April.

Parents making sacrifices for pushy offspring

Nearly two thirds of parents (62 per cent) would go without luxuries in order to provide their children with them, new research has revealed.
And half (49 per cent) have succumbed to their children’’s whingeing over the past 12 month, with DVDs and game consoles the most common purchases by relenting guardians.
The survey by Engage Mutual found that 68 per cent of parents would make financial sacrifices to fund their children’’s leisure pursuits and satisfy their vanity, with toys, mobile phones, branded clothing and makeup among the other popular requests.
Engage Mutual spokesperson Karl Elliott said the research showed that some children were ”wearing the trousers” in the money stakes.
He continued: "With kids being spoilt for choice for toys, technology and games, many feel pressure from their peers to keep up with the latest gadgets and labels.
"In modern Britain, parents often find themselves caught up in a balance between giving their kids what they want and finding the money to pay."
Parents with children aged 12 to 17 are the most likely to be beaten by pleading and puppy-dog eyes.

Nintendo has announced the forthcoming launch of the Wii Fit virtual gym, with health specialists already hailing it as an ideal means of fighting the growing of problem of obesity in the UK.
Already more than two million Wii consoles have been sold in Britain since its launch just over a year ago.
Now that number looks set to increase further with the April launch of the Wii fit, which has been marketed as an enjoyable alternative to visiting the gym.
Alongside the standard Wii console and its trademark controllers, the new pacakage will include a special balance board, designed like a pair of bathroom scales, which will be able to assess a player’s weight and height.

Sony has confirmed that it has sold more than one million Playstation 3 units in the UK, with the system beating off stiff competition from rival manufacturers.
Coming ahead of an official Sony press conference on its sales performance, the company revealed to the gaming website Gamasutra that it has managed to reach the one million mark in just under 40 weeks.
