Sky TV Offers - From just £17 per month
November 3, 2008 by The Editor
So many entertainment and home communication services to choose from; so many providers, all claiming to offer you the best deal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track. Go beyond the hype though, and real savings are possible. And most of these make Sky your best-value choice.
First, you can save with Sky TV:
- As a new customer, you’re entitled to a standard Sky box for free* (otherwise priced £49). In harness with your Sky minidish, this delivers a digital TV signal. It’s yours to keep forever. So you’ll keep receiving TV even when your area’s analogue signal gets switched off. With rival providers, like Freeview, you have to pay for the equipment that delivers your digital TV.
- If you prefer, for a one-off payment you can opt for a Sky+ box instead. This equips you to record, store and watch shows later, not when the schedules dictate. And without the cost of a separate DVD or video recorder, blank tapes or discs. It comes with all the functions of a standard Sky box, too.
- Sky Movies shows more than 850 films a month for the price of just 2 or 3 cinema admissions. Even if you’re used to renting films instead, Sky Movies works out great value.
- Sky Sports screens live coverage of more than 100 sports, including Barclays Premier League football. For a fraction of what you’d pay to see just a few of these matches in person.
Second, you can save with Sky Broadband:
- Sky Broadband is winner of price comparison website uSwitch’s 2008 ‘Best Deal for You’ award, and is for Sky TV customers only.
- There are products for every need; entry-level Sky Broadband Base is free.
- Whichever Sky Broadband product you choose, you receive, for free: a wireless router worth £50, and 12 months’ McAfee Internet Security Suite worth £49.99.**
Third, you can save with Sky Talk:
- Sky Talk is winner of 7 of 11 uSwitch customer satisfaction awards in 2008, including ‘Best Deal For You’, and is only for Sky TV customers. Sky Talk Freetime is 100% free.
- Calls to UK landlines are inclusive - either 24/7, or evenings and weekends only, depending on which Sky Talk package you take. So you can phone family and friends for longer without running up your phone bill.
- You can also take your line rental from Sky, for more monthly savings versus BT.
No equipment to buy in advance, great-value premium TV and money-saving broadband and telephony help to explain why Sky today has more than 8 million customers. If you want a complete entertainment and communications package, it could pay you to become one too.
*Minimum 12-month contract and £30 set-up fee apply.
**Apple Mac users instead receive free McAfee Virus Scan, worth £19.00.

iPhone ”nano” to be in stores for Christmas
August 4, 2008 by The Editor
A new miniature version of Apple’’s iPhone is expected to be in stores for Christmas, following the enormous success of its predecessors.
Despite industry rumours that Apple is considering dropping O2 as its British partner, the mobile phone and cheap broadband provider is set to distribute the smaller, more compact iPhone when it hits the shops.
An unnamed source told Simon Fluendy at the Daily Mail: "This will be a big one. The iPhone 3G has been the fastest-selling phone ever in the UK, but it is too expensive to be a realistic proposition in the pay-as-you-go market."
The new iPhone will be available to pay-as-you-go customers for up to £150, and as a smaller, more affordable version of the iPhone 3G it is expected to be a top gift idea for Christmas.
Although no images have yet been made available of the new device, suggestions are that Apple may be playing around with some innovative designs, perhaps involving a wheel on the back where numbers would be dialled from.
Innovative design and a more consumer-friendly price could mean that Apple exceed the success of the original iPhone. Consumers should shop around for the best new deals on electrical goods.

Wii fit gives HMV a leg-up
July 2, 2008 by The Editor
New games and technology such as the Wii Fit and Grand Theft Auto have pushed up HMV’’s year-on-year sales by a quarter, new figures reveal.
The retailer’’s latest sales figures show a 25 per cent rise in pre-tax profit, bringing it to £56.6 million in the year leading up to April 26th.
The rise in games console sales helped HMV buck the trend of falling high street profits in the midst of the credit crunch.
Games and technology now make up 21 per cent of the store’’s sales – up seven per cent of their share last year.
HMV now holds a 29 per cent share of the music market, while a quarter of DVDs bought in the UK are purchased from the store.
Simon Fox, chief executive of the chain, said: "We had a terrific year for games last year, with growth of about 60 per cent.
"In the year in, we”re ahead of where we planned to be. We”re riding the game growth wave and we”re riding ahead of the curve."
HMV bosses said the news was positive as they look forward to continued strong sales figures going into the Christmas period.

Illegal file-sharing targeted by ISP
June 10, 2008 by The Editor
Virgin Media will become the first internet service provider (ISP) to target broadband subscribers who indulge in illegal file-sharing.
Virgin will be sending out letters to thousands of flagged web-users to issue a written warning. The British Phonographic Industry is keen to come down hard on illegal downloading and file-sharing through a "three strikes and out" policy, a move that would lead to disconnection and potentially even prosecution.
Geoff Taylor, the chief executive of BPI, told Amol Rajan at independent.co.uk: "Virgin Media is the first ISP to publicly address the problem. It is a socially responsible ISP and I think other ISPs will look at this and see progress. I am very encouraged they have engaged with us. They understand the rights of musicians."
He added: "Education is the absolute key to reducing the amount of illegal downloading … new partnerships with ISPs can help build an internet in which music is properly valued."
Despite the BPI’’s hardline approach to the subject, Virgin is taking a softer approach for the next few weeks, intending to simply raise awareness at first through written correspondence with particularly indulgent web-users.

Films available in UK through iTunes
June 4, 2008 by The Editor
Broadband users in the UK can now download any of 700 films through iTunes, for both rental and purchase.
The downloads are the result of new deals with a number of Hollywood studios. Web-users can download a selected film to their computer before having the option of transferring to a range of media. The latest releases will cost a maximum of £10.99 to buy and £3.49 to rent, with a £1 premium for HD versions.
Analyst Michael Gertenberg told Claudine Beaumont at telegraph.co.uk: "What iTunes was to music stores online, it now is to video rentals. It’’s an important move that clearly is going to have an impact on the industry in fairly short order. This will change how folks rent movies and at the same time, drive more consumers into the Apple ecosystem."
Film rentals are available for 30 days from the moment of download, with the download ending 48 hours after the customer initiates a viewing. Studios such as Walt Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures and Sony have all reached distribution deals with Apple.
The launch has been timed to coincide with the build-up to the release of the latest iPhone.

Pricing shift indicated with Apple’’s new HBO deal
May 15, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Computers, Movies, Music downloads, Televisions
A host of TV shows are to be made available through a new deal iTunes has made with cable TV producer HBO.
Prices will, however, differ for some programmes.
HBO television shows such as The Sopranos, Sex and the City and Flight of the Conchords will be available to download through iTunes, but some shows will be more expensive than others, priced at nearly $3 an episode rather than $2.
Rob Enderle, founder and principal analyst at consulting firm the Enderle Group, told John Boudreau at mercurynews.com: "I think this is the way it will go. Maybe a first-time movie will sell for $30. It’’s not going to sell for $2."
The pricing differences are based on the fact that not all content has equal status, with newer shows commanding the premium price tag.
The deal will enable Apple to draw attention away from a disagreement with American broadcaster NBC which lead to Apple removing all the network’’s shows from iTunes.
Around 800 TV shows are already available through iTunes, with episode download figures currently standing at 150 million.

Apple to sell movies via iTunes
May 3, 2008 by The Editor
Apple has revealed that customers will be able to purchase new movie releases from major film studios from iTunes on the same day they are released on DVD.
The iPod manufacturer revealed that new releases and catalogue titles from studios like 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios would be made available via iTunes.
Eddy Cue, Apple’’s vice president of iTunes, commented: "We”re thrilled to bring iTunes Store customers new films for purchase day-and-date with the DVD release.
"We think movie fans will love being able to buy their favourites from major and independent studios."
Once purchases, the movies can be viewed on an iPod with video function, iPhone, Mac or PC or on a widescreen TV with Apple TV.
Adam Baum, a media analyst at Gartner, explained to the Times that studios had been reluctant to undermine DVD sales, but were beginning to understand the importance of digital services.
"This is ultimately cheaper for the studios, who will get rid of a lot of manufacturing and distribution costs, and they won”t have to share such a large slice of the pie with retailers," he explained.

Building societies report record investments
April 30, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Music downloads, UK Holidays
In spite of the current global credit crunch, UK building societies benefited from record cash inflows during March, new figures show.
According to the latest figures from the Buildings Society Association (BSA) the sector brought it £1.26 billion over the month, representing a 70 per cent improvement on the same time last year and further proof that consumers are looking to protect their money amid the current economic uncertainty.
Adrian Coles, director-general of the BSA, noted: "Against the current uncertain economic climate, building societies are seen as tried and tested, traditional and trusted. Together with the competitive rates of interest they offer, these attributes mean societies continue to attract record levels of savings."
It was also revealed that building societies lent some £3,631 in March in comparison to £5,439 in the same month in 2007.
The publication of the figures comes soon after it was reported that growing numbers of consumers are choosing to keep their money at home rather than put it into banks or traditional investments.

New deal boosts Nokia music download offers
April 23, 2008 by The Editor
Nokia has confirmed that it has signed an important new deal with the record label Sony BMG which will allow it to offer customers millions of songs to download.
This latest development means that the Finnish company now has deals in place with two of the world’’s big four record labels, with Universal Music having signed up late last year and is likely to further boost the popularity of its Comes With Music Service.
Through the service, customers are able to buy a special handset and then download as much music as they like over their phone for the duration of a one-year contract.
In addition, the offer also allows customers to keep their downloaded tracks and even transfer them onto another device once their contract is up.
Tero Ojanpera, executive vice president and head of the Nokia entertainment and communities business, commented: "As one of the leading major music companies in the world, our collaboration with Sony BMG means we can offer a huge range of fantastic music from international and local artists via Comes With Music."
Among the artists on offer to Nokia customers are Britney Spears, Bob Dylan, Foo Fighters, Michael Jackson and X Factor winners Leon Jackson and Leona Lewis.
