Delia’s back with more tips for the kitchen

Cooking superstar Delia Smith as back with a new series - and she’s aiming her new show at people who don’t have time to cook.
The TV series comes with an accompanying book, How to Cheat at Cooking, and supermarkets are braced for the Delia affect - whenever she mentions a product, sales are bound to increase.
Appearing on Lorraine Kelly’s LK Today, Delia has given cookers a list of items which she believes are essential in the modern kitchen.
Tortellini pasta, Auntie Bessie’s frozen mashed potato, English Provender Very Lazy Ginger and raw frozen tiger prawns all come highly recommended, as do Tesco’s dried ciabatta breadcrumbs, marigold bouillon powder and pine nuts.
Sales of shallots famously rose by 2,000 per cent when mentioned by Delia, while cranberries, lemon zesters and pizza stones have enjoyed a similar boost.
Delia, now as famous for her love of Norwich City as she is for her proficiency in the kitchen, first published a cheat cook book back in 1971.

Shoppers ‘checking eco-friendliness of groceries’
March 11, 2008 by The Editor
Consumers in the UK are beginning to take into account the environmental impact of their food and grocery goods before making their purchase, it has been suggested.
According to a recent study from Virgin Money, one in five British shoppers check the products and services they pay for to see whether they have green credentials - and food products are among the most scrutinised.
It was reported that this amounts to around 8.2 million consumers across the nation who are taking into account things such as how far their products have travelled and how carbon neutral service providers are.
Commenting on the report, Virgin Money spokesman Jason Wyer-Smith said that it was becoming increasingly noticeable that companies need to offer their customers products that were more ecologically balanced.
"Everyone is becoming more environmentally aware and that is beginning to have an impact on people’s purchasing decisions. We believe companies can be more successful by being greener," he said.
Marks & Spencer was among the retailers praised for its eco-credentials and earlier this month the company announced it would begin charging five pence for their plastic bags in a bid to encourage shoppers to re-use.

Uncertain future for organic cod
March 6, 2008 by The Editor
People with a taste for organic cooking might be disappointed by reports that the world’s first organic cod farm, No Catch, has been put into administration with debts of more than £40 million.
According to the Guardian, Johnson Seafarms off Shetland was signed up by some major supermarket names in the UK and France and promised to eventually deliver more than ten per cent of the UK’s demand for cod.
Top chefs in London restaurants described the cod as being a quality fish with “really nice white flake”, the newspaper said.
Grant Thornton, the administrators, said the company could possibly be broken up rather than salvaged.
The organically-farmed cod was about half as expensive again than wild-caught cod, because of the ethical standards and feeding programme.
The cod was reared without the use of artificial dyes, pesticides and hormones and it worked with animal welfare organisations to promote good practice.
