Tesco launches new travel insurance offer

Tesco launches new travel insurance offerTesco Personal Finance has introduced a new travel insurance offer for the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend, offering coverage from £5.40 per person.

The new price includes the ten per cent discount available to customers choosing to book online and covers up to three days abroad anywhere in Europe. The insurer hopes to appeal to people looking to get away for a short weekend break to a European city such as Paris, Madrid, Rome or Prague.

Rachel Cutler, head of Tesco Travel Insurance, says: "Short city breaks to Europe are very popular as last minute package deals are readily available. It’’s great that people want to make the most of the Bank Holiday but it’’s vital that travellers remember to buy travel insurance."

Miss Cutler acknowledges that many travellers plan to risk going overseas for weekend breaks without insurance, owing to the relatively short space of time that they”ll be abroad, but she warns that this is not a healthy attitude and holidaymakers are exposed to the same risks they would be on a longer break.

With a wide range of cheap insurance offers currently available on the market, customers are advised to shop around for the best deals.

Halifax urges wedding parties travelling abroad to consider insurance details

August 18, 2008 by The Editor

Wedding parties should consider their insurance coverHalifax Home Insurance has urged wedding parties travelling abroad to ensure they have adequate insurance for all the stages of their trip.

New research from the high street insurer suggests that more couples than ever before are opting to travel abroad to get married, with the Caribbean and Hawaii proving the most popular destinations. Halifax argues, however, that these weddings should be treated like holidays and with potential heartbreak around the corner for the smallest hitches, good insurance is important to relieve some of the pressure.

Vicky Watson, spokesperson for Halifax Travel Insurance, said: "The bride and groom may want to consider taking out the additional cover that specialist wedding insurance providers can offer, while guests travelling abroad will need to ensure they have a travel policy that includes cover for loss of baggage."

In a current deal, Halifax offers extra cover of up to £1,500 for lost baggage, and £200 compensation for baggage delays in transit.

Weddings abroad can be relaxing affairs as many resorts offer planning services that can take charge of all areas of the operation, but adequate insurance is a vital addition to ensure that should any setbacks occur, some kind of monetary compensation will be available.

New travel insurance offer from M&S

August 6, 2008 by The Editor

New travel insurance offer from M&SHigh street retailer Marks & Spencer has announced a 20 per cent discount for customers who opt to buy their travel insurance package online for the next four weeks.

The offer is available from 7th August until 3rd September and provides cover for travel throughout the UK and Europe, and across the world. The policy also provides cover for flight cancellation if holidaymakers have not made a booking through a travel agent.

Steve Price, M&S head of General Insurance, said: "M&S travel insurance already offers great value for customers with a range of cover that has been recognised with the award of a five star rating from Defaqto. Customers already receive a five per cent discount when applying online, and we are pleased to offer this additional discount during one of the busiest holiday periods."

By offering the discount at the height of the summer and making an effort to appeal to the growing number of independent travellers, M&S should find a positive response to the new offer.

Additional insurance features include coverage worth £10 million to cover medical expenses and £2,500 worth of coverage for baggage, although a further discount is on offer for customers who choose not to insure their cases.

Cheap travel insurance available for Beijing Olympics

Cheap travel insurance available for Beijing OlympicsTravel insurance for those going to the Olympic Games in Beijing is available for as little as £13, according to comparison website moneysupermarket.com.

Nearly 15 per cent of British holidaymakers still opt to travel overseas without any insurance, despite the fact that £3 million of medical coverage is available from some insurers from a premium of less than £20.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com said: "Some people may not take out insurance because they are concerned about the cost; however, with worldwide insurance costing less than a souvenir t-shirt there is really no excuse to travel without cover."

The website lists five different insurers who currently offer good deals that can be taken advantage of by people making the trip to Beijing this summer. Flexicover Direct and Top Dog both offer £10 million of medical coverage for less than £15.

Holidaymakers are advised not to risk travelling long distances overseas without adequate coverage, especially when there are plenty of policies to suit all budgets.

Intense competition has resulted in some outstanding offers, and consumers who set aside some time to shop around will find both peace of mind and great new deals.

Adrenaline junkies advised to seek current insurance offers

Adrenaline junkies advised to seek current insurance offersHolidaymakers looking to experience the latest extreme sports on holiday should check they”re insured for the activities they intend to take part in.

Although nearly 40 per cent of British holidaymakers intend to take part in anything from bungee jumping through to white-water rafting and rock-climbing, the evidence suggests that many embark on their adventures without adequate insurance.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, said: "With the thrill of jumping out of a plane or negotiating white-water rapids, some holidaymakers do not give a second thought to checking they are adequately covered, or - more shockingly - they take part knowing they are uninsured."

One in eight British holidaymakers take part in extreme sports without any insurance, despite the fact that offers are available quite cheaply. For as little as £15, travellers can buy insurance for a fortnight of rafting in America.

Over half of holidaymakers aged in their 20s have taken part in an extreme activity impulsively, but by pursuing current insurance offers people can protect themselves from any accidents along the way.

Customers are advised to shop around, as the best deals are often available from the lesser known insurers.

Teens holidaying alone urged to seek current insurance offers

Teens holidaying alone urged to seek current insurance offersInsurer swiftcover.com has urged the half million teenagers travelling on holiday without their parents to check they are properly insured.

A fifth of Britons travel abroad without insurance, and if teenagers are travelling without their parents, having adequate insurance is a good way to ease any problems that might occur. Parents are also urged to remind their kids to take advice onboard.

Tina Shortle, marketing director of swiftcover.com, said: "Your first parent free holiday can be a great experience, but because of their age and new found freedom, fledgling holiday makers can be one of the most at risk groups. We are encouraging teens to be prepared and stay safe so their holiday can be one to remember for all the right reasons."

The statistics reveal the extent of the problem amongst teens travelling without their parents for the first time, with nearly half those surveyed admitting to drinking too much, and 80 per cent admitting to not using enough sun cream. More than ten per cent get lost at some point on their holiday.

Teenagers should shop around for the best current insurance offers and be sensible and alert when on holiday.

Rising number of children travelling prompts advice to seek current insurance offers

July 9, 2008 by The Editor

More children travelling abroad with familiesMore children than ever before are travelling overseas with their families, according to new figures from insurance.co.uk.

The study found that some 60 per cent of under-3s have already been abroad at least once in their lives, while over a quarter of babies aged less than six months have been abroad four times or more. Spain and the United States are the most popular destinations for families with young children.

Steve Grainger, head of insurance.co.uk, said: "Whilst a family with young children, planning on taking lots of gadgets and toys abroad, might need to pay more attention to the value of cover they take out, many travellers over 60 will need to pay closer attention to the cover an insurer will provide for pre-existing medical conditions."

Consumers are advised to shop around for the best current insurance offers and to ensure that their chosen policy covers their specific need.
The new figures reflect the changing times, with a third of over-60s still having never been abroad before. The era of cheap travel has not permeated the older generation as effectively as the young.

Independent travellers urged to seek current insurance offers

July 8, 2008 by The Editor

Independent travellers urged to seek current insurance offersInsurance company AXA has urged the rising number of independent UK holidaymakers to seek insurance for their travels.

During 2006 nearly ten million holidaymakers opted to go on holiday without making arrangements through travel agents or other organisations, and these travellers are advised to check that their insurance policies cover this type of travel.

Edward Dutton, AXA’’s head of Personal Lines Underwriting said: "Travel insurance has come under some criticism for some of the exclusions in a traditional policy which is why we launched our Independent Traveller product earlier in the year. In 2006, 21 million travel policies were taken out - if over half of these are not meeting potential requirements then this is something consumers need to be aware of."

AXA’’s Independent Traveller offer includes cover for delayed departures, cancellation costs and extra accommodation, all for an extra £10 on top of the existing policy.

With insurance companies not always keeping track of holiday-making trends, it is important for those not travelling on traditional tourist packages to make sure they plug any gaps in their existing policies.

Market competition pushes travel insurance prices down

Travel cover prices fallingGrowing competition in the travel insurance sector has led to a spate of special offers for consumers, a new study has found.

Research carried out by the US firm Defaqto found that premium levels for the vast majority of travel insurance products are now lower than they were in 2003, even before inflation is taken into account.

Only Brits taking out annual cover for travel to the United States are now facing higher premiums, the study also found.

In spite of this, however, it is believed that around one in seven people still travel overseas without any travel insurance policy in place.

Brian Brown, the author of the report, said: "Competition in the travel insurance market is having a very significant effect on the price of travel cover.

"The availability of a huge number of policies, many of them online, has driven many insurers to lower their premiums."

Brits holidaying in Europe this summer, for example, can get travel insurance for just £6, while a host of other offers are also available. ADNFCR-1460-ID-18584665-ADNFCR

Lost luggage fiasco highlights travel insurance importance

April 7, 2008 by The Editor

Flyers advised to guard against lost luggageThe ongoing lost luggage fiasco at Heathrow Airport’’s new Terminal 5 has served to highlight the importance of travel insurance, experts have stated.

During the first week of the terminal being open, British Airways has managed to lose thousands of bags and suitcases in addition to cancelling dozens of flights and for many travellers this inconvenience will have been made worse by their failure to take out appropriate cover.

According to Go Travel Insurance, 23 per cent of its claims related to lost luggage, while experts point out that holidaymakers who shop around for the best offer can get travel insurance that will cover almost every airport-related mishap for as little as £5 a day.

However, those carrying items with a value in excess of £1,500 may want to think about taking out extra cover, Andrew Norman, the director of Totally Insured Travel, has explained.

“We think the extra cover will be appreciated not just by business travellers who absolutely have to be at a meeting but also those on holiday who want to know they won”t be out of pocket if they need to make alternative arrangements.”

Last week it emerged that the DJ Calvin Harris was one of those affected by the baggage handling crisis, losing a laptop containing several new songs.

Insurance customers should read small print

Always read the small print when shopping around Insurance customers are being urged to read the small print on their policies in order to make sure they are fully covered.

Research from Tescocompare.com reveals that one million Brits have been unable to make a claim on a home, car or travel insurance policy because they did not have the right level of protection.

The average unsuccessful claim costs £736 according to Tesco and customers are therefore advised to scrutinise policies carefully before making a purchase.

"Insurance polices can be complicated, and it is not surprising that so many people find themselves in a situation where they thought they were covered when in fact they weren’t," said Paul Baxter of Tesco.

Consumers should take time to shop around for insurance deals to secure a policy that offers the level of protection they require at a competitive price.

Meanwhile the Post Office is urging consumers to shop around for life insurance cover instead of taking out a policy with their mortgage provider as doing so could help them save up to £2,000.

Store card provider slashes late payment fees

Great news for UK shoppersBarclays Partner Finance, which provides store cards for retailers including Karen Millen and Hobbs, has slashed its late payment fees following pressure from the Office of Fair Trading.

The Barclays-owned firm, which was formerly branded Clydesdale Financial Services, said charges for late payment of store card balances would be cut by over £10.

It insisted its fees were transparent and fair but said the decision was made to reduce them from £22.50 to £12 in order to "remove uncertainty and create clarity for customers".

The OFT has been putting pressure on store card providers to reduce their charges following numerous complaints from customers.

Mike Haley, head of consumer protection at the OFT, said: "This is a great result for consumers and we are very pleased that Clydesdale Financial Services has decided to reduce its charges."

The decision highlights the need for consumers to read the small print on store card offers carefully in order to choose a deal that suits them. Interest rates on store cards can also vary so consumers should shop around.

Caravanners advised of special insurance needs

Caravanners need to get the right coverHolidaymakers thinking of heading off for a break in their caravan have been advised to ensure that they are fully insured first.

Caravanners should have an all-risk home insurance policy in place to cover against any high-value items lost or stolen on a holiday, experts have stated, while consumers should also be wary of products marketed specifically at the sector.

Rita Sadler, of Safeguard Insurance, advised: "If people take expensive valuables away with them – such as laptops, for instance – are these covered by your caravan insurance policy or do they need to be insured separately/covered by your home contents insurance?

"My advice to anyone is that, rather than risk it – because there’s such a variance of caravan insurance – if you’ve got an expensive laptop, what you should do automatically is to insure them on your home insurance on an all-risk policy, or cover that’s effective while it’s away."

According to the latest figures from the Caravan Club, caravanning is now the most popular paid-for holiday in the UK, with 19 per cent of people having taken one over the past year.

Membership of the organisation increased by 57,000 last year alone, and now stands at in excess of one million, it was also revealed. ADNFCR-1460-ID-18531819-ADNFCR

Brits the most web-savvy shoppers in Europe

Brits going online to grab a bargainBritons are the biggest online spenders in the whole of Europe, new statistics show.

As growing numbers of retailers put their best offers online, the UK spends in excess of £1 billion a month over the internet, with this figure getting bigger by the day.

Such enthusiasm for online shopping saw sales total £12.8 billion last year alone, in comparison to the £10.3 billion spent in Germany, which came second in the poll compiled by research firm Mintel.

Meanwhile, France raked in just £5.5 billion worth of online sales over the course of the year and consumers living in Italy and Spain spent just £870 million and £790 million over the internet respectively.

According to Mintel retail research head Richard Perks, the figures show that Britain now has "the most developed online market in Europe", due largely to the "sophisticated offerings" of UK retailers.

The study also predicted that online sales are expected to grow by an additional 199 per cent by 2012. ADNFCR-1460-ID-18531813-ADNFCR

Holidaying Brits likely to ignore insurance this Easter

Easter may end up a disaster for uninsured Brits A worryingly large proportion of people will head away for the Easter break without any valid travel insurance in place, experts have warned.

Not only will those heading for a quick break in this country neglect to take out any cover but also large numbers of those heading overseas for the long weekend will also fail to take out insurance, Sainsbury’s Finance has warned.

According to research carried out by the organisation, around 4.2 million people didn’t have any travel insurance policy in place the last time they went overseas, whether this was due to forgetting to take out a product or an attempt to save a few pounds.

"Easter can be a great time to get away, but these are alarming figures because taking travel insurance on holiday is as important as packing your passport," said Neil Laird, the travel insurance manager at Sainsbury’s Finance.

"It doesn’t matter if it’s an Easter break, a weekend away or your main summer holiday, if something happens whilst you’re abroad, you need to know that you have adequate cover in place to take care of things."

More than 1m Brits tell insurers lies

Not everyone tells the truth when taking out insurance More than a million Britons have lied when taking out an insurance policy in a bid to save a few pounds, while many more have simply guessed over the key information insurers ask for, new research has revealed.

According to Sainsbury’s Finance, some 1.12 million people each year at least bend the truth when it comes to filling out their insurance application forms.

Furthermore, as many as 24 million general insurance policies have been taken out with people making a guess at the pertinent information over the past five years alone.

The study also found that 18 per cent of those taking out home insurance policies have not admitted to all the facts, with this proportion standing at 15 per cent and 12 per cent for car and travel insurance policies respectively.

Commenting on the findings, Steve Johnson, head of insurance at Sainsbury’s Finance, said: "It really is quite concerning that so many people seem to think it doesn’t matter if they take a guess at the information requested at the point of taking out cover.
