Current money offer as Post Office trials commission-free foreign currency
June 20, 2008 by The Editor

The Post Office is testing a new scheme designed to ease the purchase of foreign currency for British holidaymakers.
Selected Post Office branches will be installed with foreign currency ATMs capable of issuing euros or US dollars without charging commission. The ATMs will accept debit cards as payment and conversions will be calculated at the listed rate.
Helen Warburton, head of Post Office travel services, said: "Holidaymakers can make real savings by avoiding all the charges and commission associated with using overseas cash machines abroad, and have more cash to enjoy on holiday instead. Our new ATM machines are a hassle-free, convenient and economic way for holidaymakers to get their holiday money from an ATM in this country at the push of a button."
If successful, the machines should prove a handy current money offer for holidaymakers travelling to Europe or the US.
Last year 309 million withdrawals were made at overseas ATMs from cards issued in the UK, a statistic which suggests that the Post Office’’s new offer could find great success as people take the opportunity to save both commission costs and the price of an overseas withdrawal charged by some banks.

BT faces criticism for further connection problem
June 20, 2008 by The Editor

BT has drawn criticism from local communities in Shetland after a 30-hour broadband connection failure.
BT subscribers in the rural Shetland villages of Vidlin and Uyeasound experienced a problem with their connections and endured a full 24 hours before the broadband provider owned up to a central technical fault.
A BT spokesman told Hans J Marter at shetland-news.co.uk: "I”m afraid it was the usual suspect which caused the problem, ie a fault on the virtual path of the core network between Glasgow and Lerwick. Much work has been carried out on the core network to solve this recurring problem and it’’s deeply frustrating both to us and yourselves that it has happened again."
The problem, the latest in a series, caused disruption to both home and business users in the area. Despite current money offers for cheap broadband, the state of connectivity in many rural areas is a constant cause of indignation for many countryside residents.
Although a recent Ofcom study found that the number of rural web-users has surpassed those in urban centres for the first time, rural connection speeds are generally slower owing to distances from telephone exchanges and other factors.

Spain and France still popular among UK holidaymakers
February 21, 2008 by The Editor

Despite travellers being offered a host of new destinations as a result of the low-cost flights revolution, the traditional favourites of Spain and France are as popular as ever among British holidaymakers, it has been revealed.
According to the website Holidays-Direct.co.uk, Spain remains the firm favourite for Brits looking to get away, due largely to the large number of great deals on offer all year round, though Greece, France and Lanzerote are all highly popular.
Among those looking for a city break, Barcelona is currently the number one destination, closely followed by Rome, Dublin and Venice.
Jon Pearce from the website said: "We all know that Brits love holidays in Spain, they have been a favourite for years, as have holidays in Greece. There are plenty of cheap holidays available in both destinations.
"The other top ten holiday destinations are the Spanish islands (the Canaries and Balearics) as well as the Caribbean, Tunisia and Sharm el Sheikh."
However, statistics also show that, due partly to the more competitive deals on offer, British travellers are becoming increasingly adventurous, with Eastern Europe and even further afield now popular among holidaymakers.

Ski Club offers advice on family holiday deals
February 14, 2008 by The Editor

Families looking to enjoy some winter sports action should look to take advantage of offers outside of school holidays.
That is according to the Ski Club of Great Britain, which has issued its latest advice on getting the most out a winter break.
Holidaymakers looking for the cheapest offer should try and avoid destinations in popular countries such as France and Switzerland, with countries like Bulgaria offering better deals for families, particularly outside of the school holidays.
The Ski Club added that, given that school holiday dates across the continent vary, it is "generally very easy" to book a skiing holiday while avoiding the crowds.
For those travellers without children, the Times has also pointed out that there are some excellent last-minute offers to be had on skiing holidays taken once the school holidays are over, with great deals even available for the French Alps and North America.
