Current money offer as Post Office trials commission-free foreign currency
June 20, 2008 by The Editor
The Post Office is testing a new scheme designed to ease the purchase of foreign currency for British holidaymakers.
Selected Post Office branches will be installed with foreign currency ATMs capable of issuing euros or US dollars without charging commission. The ATMs will accept debit cards as payment and conversions will be calculated at the listed rate.
Helen Warburton, head of Post Office travel services, said: "Holidaymakers can make real savings by avoiding all the charges and commission associated with using overseas cash machines abroad, and have more cash to enjoy on holiday instead. Our new ATM machines are a hassle-free, convenient and economic way for holidaymakers to get their holiday money from an ATM in this country at the push of a button."
If successful, the machines should prove a handy current money offer for holidaymakers travelling to Europe or the US.
Last year 309 million withdrawals were made at overseas ATMs from cards issued in the UK, a statistic which suggests that the Post Office’’s new offer could find great success as people take the opportunity to save both commission costs and the price of an overseas withdrawal charged by some banks.

Fuel prices to plague Bank Holiday
May 23, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Car hire, Family holiday
According to the AA, drivers looking to make a Bank Holiday getaway are looking at steep price hikes in comparison to this time last year.
The motoring agency estimates that drivers will need to pay an additional £14 on last year’’s prices to fill up.
Andrew Howard of the AA told the BBC: "It will strike a lot of people driving this weekend just how different things are."
In the wake of surging oil prices, the price of diesel has risen by nearly 30 per cent, while the price of petrol has risen by 17 per cent.
The costs of fuel have resulted in some motorists driving less in order to save money, while the AA has joined other organisations in calling for a further delay to the government’’s plan to increase prices even more by 2 pence a litre.
The estimated 18 million Bank Holiday drivers will have their routes eased slightly with the suspension of nearly 20 roadworks over the course of the weekend.

UK saves as faith in economy dwindles
May 23, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Family holiday, Saving accounts
According to a new study from Birmingham Midshires, British residents have each saved around £30 more this year than they did the year before.
The study found that over 60 per cent of the 2,000 Brits surveyed have put money aside over the past three months.
Tim Hague, director of savings and investments at Birmingham Midshires, told myfinances.co.uk: "This research shows how current market conditions are playing on the minds of Britons. Despite a marked increase in living costs, people are becoming more cautious and managing to save more and spend less, with their financial future in mind."
Those surveyed revealed all the expected reasons for spending savings, with around a quarter of the 2,000 participants describing simple overspending, and holiday bookings. A new factor however, is a response to the rising costs of food and utilities.
Birmingham Midshires recommends that savers maintain a savings account with three months wages in it, at the very least.

Cheap solar panels in development
May 13, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Family holiday, Flights, Televisions, UK Holidays
A team of Welsh scientists at Bangor University are planning to copy the manner in which plants take in sunlight, in a bid to create cheaper solar panels.
By mimicking photosynthesis, the intention is to bring solar energy more within the budgets of families across the UK and increase the use of electricity produced by renewable means.
Dr Peter Holliman, from the University’’s School of Chemistry, told icwales.co.uk: "We aim to test the feasibility of extracting the membranes from within the (plant) cell and attaching them to electrodes to create efficient low-cost solar energy harvesters."
He added: "It is already known that such solar cells are capable of generating very small currents from sunlight. Here we are aiming to increase these currents in order to develop a viable commercial technology."
Dr Holliman will spend a year working on the experiment, which is funded by the UK?s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Current solar panels cost in the region of £5,000, beyond the capabilities of most families, so their use is normally restricted to businesses.

Regional airports ”offer Brits greater choice and cheaper fares”
May 8, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Beach holiday, Family holiday, Flights, UK Holidays
British holidaymakers and business travellers are benefiting from the extensive services being offered by the country’’s regional airports.
That is according to one leading aviation expert, who has explained that the rise of smaller airports outside of the main UK cities has led to consumers having greater choice, with budget airlines rolling out a host of special offers over both the winter and summer months.
Tony Hallwood, commercial and aviation development director at Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBA), explained: "As [regional] airports introduce more destinations and more choice with a wider number of scheduled airlines, there is now less need for people to trawl down to London to connect to flights worldwide.
"There is not a shadow of a doubt that regional airports will become even more popular in future," he added.
The comments come just weeks after the US and the European Union introduced an open skies agreement, which is widely expected to lead to more flights offers and greater value for consumers, particularly with regards to transatlantic services.

Market competition pushes travel insurance prices down
May 8, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Family holiday, Flights, Travel insurance, UK Holidays
Growing competition in the travel insurance sector has led to a spate of special offers for consumers, a new study has found.
Research carried out by the US firm Defaqto found that premium levels for the vast majority of travel insurance products are now lower than they were in 2003, even before inflation is taken into account.
Only Brits taking out annual cover for travel to the United States are now facing higher premiums, the study also found.
In spite of this, however, it is believed that around one in seven people still travel overseas without any travel insurance policy in place.
Brian Brown, the author of the report, said: "Competition in the travel insurance market is having a very significant effect on the price of travel cover.
"The availability of a huge number of policies, many of them online, has driven many insurers to lower their premiums."
Brits holidaying in Europe this summer, for example, can get travel insurance for just £6, while a host of other offers are also available.

Budget airlines announce new summer flight offers
April 28, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Beach holiday, Family holiday, Flights
A host of budget airlines have just announced the launch of a number of new routes that will offer UK holidaymakers cheap flights to destinations across Europe.
Last week the national carrier British Airways confirmed that it is to roll-out an expansion of its short-haul network, with a new route from London’’s growing City Airport to Dublin, which will soon be complemented by regular flights to Edinburgh as well as Nice in the south of France.
Now, low-cost rivals Ryanair and easyJet have unveiled their latest travel offers in the run-up to what is expected to be a busy summer holiday season.
The Irish firm will fly from London’’s Stansted Airport to the sunshine destinations of Rimini and Beziers from the start of June.
In addition, easyJet will launch a new Edinburgh to Nice route, as well as a Glasgow to faro service.
Furthermore, it will also start flying from Bristol Airport to Olbia on Sardinia as well as Biarritz and the Croatian city of Split.
David Osborne, easyJet UK manager, noted: "EasyJet has seen a huge increase in flights to summer sun destinations in 2007-2008 from Bristol International Airport, with the arrival of Ibiza, Bordeaux, Milan, Lisbon, Warsaw and Funchal last year. The new routes…reinforce our position as the UK’’s largest airline."

Abbey announces new ”Zero” credit card offer
April 28, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Credit cards, Family holiday, Flights
Abbey has announced the launch of its newest credit card, which offers consumers a host of benefits with no additional fees.
Called the ”Zero card”, the new product has been launched as the first credit card on the UK market to offer no balance transfer fees and no cash advance fee, in addition to not charging extra for foreign exchanges.
Given that the usual foreign exchange rate fee on an Abbey card is 2.75 per cent, this latest offer represents the ideal choice for Brits looking to use their plastic while abroad, while it also comes with a six-month interest free period on balance transfers and purchases.
Roger Lovering, managing director of Abbey Credit Cards, commented: "We promised the market that we would continue to innovate and that is exactly what we”ve done. The Abbey Zero card is the first ever card to eliminate all these fees at once.
"With no balance transfer fee and six months interest free, it’’s the perfect card to transfer a debt you want to pay off quickly and has clear advantages for the summer too. No foreign exchange fee makes holiday spending less expensive and Zero also has no cash advance fee for those rare times you might need cash in an emergency."
The launch comes as personal advisors advise consumers to shop around and compare credit cards as lenders reign in their best offers as they try and protect themselves from the effects of the credit crunch.

Holidaying Brits won over by revamped coastal towns
April 25, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Beach holiday, Family holiday, UK Holidays
A spate of recent regeneration projects have led to UK coastal resorts enjoying soaring numbers of visitors.
That is according to the national tourism agency VisitBritain, which found that holidaymakers looking to take advantage of special offers within the UK are now, on average, younger than ever before.
This is due to a number of resorts becoming fashionable, alongside the warmer weather being seen in the UK and the fact that the falling value of the pound against the euro makes holidaying abroad too costly for many.
Sian Brenchley, spokesperson for VisitBritain, explained: "Brighton’’s a kind of fashion mecca to younger people, and you”ve also got coastal resorts around the UK capitalising on the food revolution – like Whitstable offering oysters."
The news comes soon after the culture secretary Andy Burnham announced plans to invest millions of pounds in improving the seaside towns of Blackpool, Dover and Torbay in an effort to offer Britons looking to holiday at home even more choice.
Around £4 million will be given to each of the big resorts, while a dozen other holiday destinations will also receive grants to help them cope with booming demand from holidaymakers.

Brits holidaying at home to benefit from May Day offers
April 24, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Family holiday, UK Holidays
The hotel booking website LateRooms.com has announced a series of special accommodation offers for the forthcoming May Day Bank holiday.
With the Met Office having recently predicted that this year’’s summer is set to bring above average temperatures, millions of Brits are likely to make up for a disappointing Easter and take a holiday.
Furthermore, given that many consumers are starting to see their finances stretched in the wake of the global credit crunch, while the falling value of the pound against the euro makes a trip overseas more expensive than before, millions are expected to holiday in the UK, prompting holiday firms to launch a spate of offers as they compete for custom.
Among the UK holiday destinations on offer through the website are Alnwick Castle in the north-east, which is better known to many as the film location of the Hogwarts school of magic in the Harry Potter series.
In addition, it has offers on hotels close to the Eden Project in Cornwall and Tatton Park in Cheshire.
Chris Morris, managing director at LateRooms, said: "After last year’’s wet summer, the news of a warmer 2008 is coaxing people out of their homes and back into the great British countryside.
"There is a multitude of beautiful gardens and heritage attractions in the UK, which can be explored at length over the bank holiday weekend."

UK holidays offers soaring in popularity as Brits chose to stay home
April 18, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Family holiday, UK Holidays
With day-to-day living expenses steadily increasing across the UK, growing numbers of Brits are opting to stay at home for their holidays this year.
This has prompted a number of UK holiday operators to launch a range of special offers catering for families looking to get away without breaking the bank.
Dawn Macey, sales and marketing manager at Haven Holidays, which has seen a 30 per cent increase in bookings for June and July in comparison to this time last year, explained that this trend is likely to continue for some time.
“The current credit crunch combined with the high value of the Euro is putting people off travelling to Europe - families are opting for UK breaks because they offer such good value for money,” she explained.
In addition to cost, families are also choosing to holiday at home due to practical matters such as not having to pay extra to carry luggage on a plane, while the improved nature of UK resorts has also swayed opinion.
Ms Macey added: “Our holidays represent excellent value for money with self-catering breaks from as little as £99 for a four night stay for a family of up to four people.”
Earlier this week, a new report also highlighted that holidays are among the first things to be sacrificed as Brits tighten their purse strings in the wake of the global credit crunch.
