Fuel prices to plague Bank Holiday
May 23, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Car hire, Family holiday
According to the AA, drivers looking to make a Bank Holiday getaway are looking at steep price hikes in comparison to this time last year.
The motoring agency estimates that drivers will need to pay an additional £14 on last year’’s prices to fill up.
Andrew Howard of the AA told the BBC: "It will strike a lot of people driving this weekend just how different things are."
In the wake of surging oil prices, the price of diesel has risen by nearly 30 per cent, while the price of petrol has risen by 17 per cent.
The costs of fuel have resulted in some motorists driving less in order to save money, while the AA has joined other organisations in calling for a further delay to the government’’s plan to increase prices even more by 2 pence a litre.
The estimated 18 million Bank Holiday drivers will have their routes eased slightly with the suspension of nearly 20 roadworks over the course of the weekend.

The budget car rental firm EasyCar has announced details of its latest offer for its customers.
To celebrate the start of summer, the company has launched a new competition which will see three winners benefit from free car rental in any of the European destinations it operates in.
As well as covering the basic rental fee, the company will also offer the winners free third-party liability insurance and unlimited mileage, while sales and insurance taxes will also be thrown in for free.
Entry is available on the EasyCar website to anyone who has held a valid driving licence for at least 12 months prior to the May 19th draw and the prize can be taken up at any time before the end of the year.
News of this latest offer is likely to be warmly welcomed by consumers after American Express recently published its research into car rental prices, revealing that tariffs increased steadily over 2007, with business travellers particularly hard hit.

Drivers to benefit from UK’s largest ever hire car fleet

Two of the world’s largest car hire companies have announced that they are to merge their UK fleets in a bid to cut back on costs, with consumers likely to benefit from a host of new offers.
Coming soon after Europcar acquired rival National Car Rental, the two firms are to pool their resources to form the UK’s largest rental fleet, comprising of some 60,000 vehicles, including around 6,000 vans.
Under the deal, it is hoped that Europcar customers will benefit from a wider choice of prestigious, luxury cars, while those who usually favour National will be given access to vans and other vehicles.
This latest initiative should also give UK drivers more affordable access to Europcar’s fleet of nearly 200,000 vehicles across Europe, with the company especially strong in France and Germany.
The companies will also have a presence in 143 countries across the world.

Avis builds on 3-minute car hire offer

Avis has announced that it is to extend its ‘3 Minute Promise’ car hire offer to all of the UK’s major airports.
The firm first rolled out the offer at the start of the year at London’s Heathrow airport, with any customers enrolled on its frequent renter scheme who are not given the keys to a hire car and handed a printed agreement within three minutes receiving an apology and £20-off voucher in the post soon after.
To date in France the company has achieved a 99.7 per cent success rate for this new service, which is also available at more than 390 locations across the continent.
Commenting on the offer, Avis’ commercial director Daniel McCarthy, said: “At Heathrow airport over the first six weeks since the launch we have served over 3,250 Avis Preferred customers and only given out three retail vouchers and apologies.
“This is an excellent success rate and we are confident this will be mirrored at further locations. In addition, we are aiming to roll the service out across all 25 Avis airport locations by the end of May.”
The initiative comes as millions of Britons are expected to head away for an Easter break, with many keen to take advantage of last-minute holiday offers.
