Regional airports ”offer Brits greater choice and cheaper fares”
May 8, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Beach holiday, Family holiday, Flights, UK Holidays
British holidaymakers and business travellers are benefiting from the extensive services being offered by the country’’s regional airports.
That is according to one leading aviation expert, who has explained that the rise of smaller airports outside of the main UK cities has led to consumers having greater choice, with budget airlines rolling out a host of special offers over both the winter and summer months.
Tony Hallwood, commercial and aviation development director at Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBA), explained: "As [regional] airports introduce more destinations and more choice with a wider number of scheduled airlines, there is now less need for people to trawl down to London to connect to flights worldwide.
"There is not a shadow of a doubt that regional airports will become even more popular in future," he added.
The comments come just weeks after the US and the European Union introduced an open skies agreement, which is widely expected to lead to more flights offers and greater value for consumers, particularly with regards to transatlantic services.

Budget airlines announce new summer flight offers
April 28, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Beach holiday, Family holiday, Flights
A host of budget airlines have just announced the launch of a number of new routes that will offer UK holidaymakers cheap flights to destinations across Europe.
Last week the national carrier British Airways confirmed that it is to roll-out an expansion of its short-haul network, with a new route from London’’s growing City Airport to Dublin, which will soon be complemented by regular flights to Edinburgh as well as Nice in the south of France.
Now, low-cost rivals Ryanair and easyJet have unveiled their latest travel offers in the run-up to what is expected to be a busy summer holiday season.
The Irish firm will fly from London’’s Stansted Airport to the sunshine destinations of Rimini and Beziers from the start of June.
In addition, easyJet will launch a new Edinburgh to Nice route, as well as a Glasgow to faro service.
Furthermore, it will also start flying from Bristol Airport to Olbia on Sardinia as well as Biarritz and the Croatian city of Split.
David Osborne, easyJet UK manager, noted: "EasyJet has seen a huge increase in flights to summer sun destinations in 2007-2008 from Bristol International Airport, with the arrival of Ibiza, Bordeaux, Milan, Lisbon, Warsaw and Funchal last year. The new routes…reinforce our position as the UK’’s largest airline."

Holidaying Brits won over by revamped coastal towns
April 25, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Beach holiday, Family holiday, UK Holidays
A spate of recent regeneration projects have led to UK coastal resorts enjoying soaring numbers of visitors.
That is according to the national tourism agency VisitBritain, which found that holidaymakers looking to take advantage of special offers within the UK are now, on average, younger than ever before.
This is due to a number of resorts becoming fashionable, alongside the warmer weather being seen in the UK and the fact that the falling value of the pound against the euro makes holidaying abroad too costly for many.
Sian Brenchley, spokesperson for VisitBritain, explained: "Brighton’’s a kind of fashion mecca to younger people, and you”ve also got coastal resorts around the UK capitalising on the food revolution – like Whitstable offering oysters."
The news comes soon after the culture secretary Andy Burnham announced plans to invest millions of pounds in improving the seaside towns of Blackpool, Dover and Torbay in an effort to offer Britons looking to holiday at home even more choice.
Around £4 million will be given to each of the big resorts, while a dozen other holiday destinations will also receive grants to help them cope with booming demand from holidaymakers.

bmibaby to offer Cardiff to Barcelona cheap flights
April 8, 2008 by The Editor
Low-cost airline bmibaby has announced that it is to offer cheap flights from Cardiff Airport to the Spanish city of Barcelona.
Starting on May 24th, the budget carrier will operate the services on Tuesdays and Saturdays, while an additional Wednesday flight will be introduced from June so as to meet the increased summer demand.
One-way tickets between the two cities start at £24.99, inclusive of all taxes and charges, though the airline has reminded passengers that no refunds can be made once a flight has been booked.
Commenting on its latest route, bmibaby stated: "For food, fiesta, fashion and fun - book your sizzling summer holiday to Barcelona today. Hurry! Seats are selling faster than you can say ”where is my suitcase?”."
News of this new service comes just days after the low-cost carrier easyJet released details of its latest offers.
For travel taken between April 16th and May 21st, fares on dozens of its routes from the UK to Europe will start at just £19.99, again inclusive of all additional charges.

Brits looking for holiday offers despite gloomy economic reports
April 4, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Beach holiday, Family holiday, Flights, UK Holidays
Holiday bookings made through both online companies and high street travel agents have increased by 40 per cent over the first three months of 2008 alone, new figures show.
Coming as growing numbers of reports point to a general economic slowdown, industry observers have stated that the travel sector appears to be rising above the financial turbulence, largely as Brits make getting away their number one priority for the year.
According to Chris Nourse, general manager of Multicom, the company behind these latest statistics, people are increasingly seeing holidays as essentials rather than luxuries and so are still keen to shop around and take advantage of the deals on offer.
"Years ago, holidays abroad were seen as a luxury for the few who could afford them," he said.
"Now it seems they are being seen as more and more essential - even if people have less money in their pockets after paying bills."
Just last month, the World Travel and Tourism Council predicted that the global tourism industry will grow at a rate of 4.4 per cent a year over for the next decade.

Cold Easter prompts rise in last-minute getaways
March 27, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Beach holiday, Family holiday, Loans, Saving accounts
A near-record number of Brits are taking advantage of last-minute holiday offers and escaping the UK in an attempt to make up for the bad Easter weather.
With those who chose to holiday at home over the long weekend having been disappointed with almost Arctic-like conditions in some parts of the country, travel observers are reporting an increase in enquiries for holidays in April.
Driving this increased interest is the fact that, as Easter has fallen early this year, many schools have staggered their holidays, giving families the chance to grab a last-minute offer.
According to the website lastminute.com, Turkey and Greece are the most popular destinations for Brits looking for a late Easter sunshine break, while Dubai and resorts on Egypt’s Red Sea coast are also proving a hit among holidaymakers.
"The unusually cold weather has led to incredible demand for late Easter sun holidays," reported the firm’s UK Managing Director John Bevan.
"With Easter falling earlier than normal this year, families have realised it could be their last chance for a break before the end of the school term."

Spain and France still popular among UK holidaymakers
February 21, 2008 by The Editor
Filed under Beach holiday, Family holiday, Flights, France
Despite travellers being offered a host of new destinations as a result of the low-cost flights revolution, the traditional favourites of Spain and France are as popular as ever among British holidaymakers, it has been revealed.
According to the website Holidays-Direct.co.uk, Spain remains the firm favourite for Brits looking to get away, due largely to the large number of great deals on offer all year round, though Greece, France and Lanzerote are all highly popular.
Among those looking for a city break, Barcelona is currently the number one destination, closely followed by Rome, Dublin and Venice.
Jon Pearce from the website said: "We all know that Brits love holidays in Spain, they have been a favourite for years, as have holidays in Greece. There are plenty of cheap holidays available in both destinations.
"The other top ten holiday destinations are the Spanish islands (the Canaries and Balearics) as well as the Caribbean, Tunisia and Sharm el Sheikh."
However, statistics also show that, due partly to the more competitive deals on offer, British travellers are becoming increasingly adventurous, with Eastern Europe and even further afield now popular among holidaymakers.
