Veuve Clicquot Champagne

Maybe Yellow Label, but definitely gold medal! Once again Veuve Clicquot proves its reputation with this poweful, rich, supple wine International Wine Challenge 2003. The Widow Clicquot created the very first crystal clear Champagne in the 18th century and Veuve has remained popular and highly acclaimed ever since. A lovely biscuity, appley nose and an almost apple crumble palate gives out generous fruit overlaid with a yeasty toastiness. Great complexity and a pleasing depth. Creamy and toasty.

UK number one destination for Spanish wine
April 9, 2008 by The Editor

Britain remains the number one export destination for Spanish wines, new figures from the industry reveal.
Despite the increasing popularity of New World wines, the UK’’s love of products from Spain remained in 2007, with Brits drinking more than any other foreign consumers.
According to newly-compiled statistics from the London-based Wines of Spain, some £140 million worth of wines from quality designated regions in Spain were shipped to Britain over the course of 2007, with this representing a 15.9 per cent increase on the figure for 2006.
Maria Jose Sevilla, director of Wines from Spain, commented: “The UK consumer is embracing our wines wholeheartedly, from the elegant whites of Rias Baixas, Valdeorras and Rueda to the wonderful reds of Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Priorat and Jumilla to name but a handful – and is prepared to trade up, experimenting in different styles from a wide selection of regions.”
The comments comes soon after it was reported that sales of pink wine soared over the past 12 months as women across the UK enjoy the drink while eating or socialising in greater numbers.

Ladies help boost pink wine sales by 30% a year
April 7, 2008 by The Editor

Female drinkers are largely responsible for the soaring popularity of rose wine in the UK, it has been revealed.
Sales of the wine are currently growing at almost 30 per cent a year in comparison to just six per cent a year for the wine market in general, with females enjoying it at home or at social gatherings growing in number as well, research carried out by Nielsen has found.
The study also found that US vineyards supply around half of all the pink wines sold in the UK, though special offers and improved products from Chile, South Africa and New Zealand have all shaken up the market over the past few years.
Commenting on the figures, Christine Boggis, of industry magazine Off Licence News, said: “Rosé is going from strength to strength, shooting up nearly 30 per cent for the second year.
“It is the driving force behind the six per cent growth in overall light wine sales over the past year, and we expect it to keep on growing - despite other pressures on consumers” pockets.”
At present, the average price of a bottle of rose in a supermarket stands at £3.99, making it cheaper than red but more expensive than white.

NZ wine increasing the most popular choice fro UK drinkers

Sales of premium wine from New Zealand are soaring across the UK as consumers get a taste for the New World and take advantage of great offers.
New figures released by New Zealand Winegrowers show that wines from the country now account for more than ten per cent of all bottles sold costing over £5.
This means that total sales of New Zealand wine within the UK have now exceeded the £1 billion a year mark, with drinkers attracted to the freshness and fruitiness of the product.
Chris Yorke, global marketing director at New Zealand Winegrowers, stated: “New Zealand is now selling one in every eight bottles in the UK above £5 market. This is outstanding, especially considering New Zealand only produces 0.3 per cent of the world’s wine,” he said.
“The United Kingdom is the most sophisticated wine market in the world, due to the choice available to them, and it’s terrific that they are continuing to choose New Zealand wine.”
Majestic Wine Warehouse has also revealed that New Zealand wine is the second-most popular choice among its customers, beaten only by products from France.
