Poll reveals most useless gadgets of recent times

April 30, 2008 by The Editor

Useless gadgets pannedElectric carving knives, egg slicers and trouser presses have been named as some of the most pointless gadgets to have been offered to UK households over recent years.

While the rise of the internet has given consumers a host of new offers, particularly when it comes to household gadgets, many of these are not as good as their inventors would have originally believed.

According to a new study, the most pointless device of recent times is the electric nail file which, though not useless, called for consumers to spend up to £200 for something that did the exact same job as a 50p alternative.

This gadget beat laser-guided scissors into second place, with yoghurt makers, back scratchers, electric candles and electric fluff removers also ranking high.

Chris Winstanley, a spokesman for the website www.reevoo.com, which carried out the survey, said: "Some gadgets are really useful but this poll proves that many of them end up being a waste of money.

"Reading genuine reviews can tell you if a gadget or gizmo is likely to be the best thing you ever bought or if it will be in a cupboard and forgotten-about within a week." ADNFCR-1460-ID-18574550-ADNFCR

Heiress offers designer clothes in special fashion auction

Designer fashions on offerOne of the country’’s most fashionable women is offering hundreds of items of designer clothing over the internet.

While female consumers will be able to grab a fashion bargain, the sale of the 260 lots previously owned by the heiress Daphne Guiness is also expected to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Ms Guinness, who has previously worked as a model, fashion designer and artist, has put some of her favourite dresses and accessories up for offer, including pieces by Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Dolce and Gabbana and Chanel.

"Anyone purchasing pieces in this sale will be able to pick up top designer-wear at a fraction of the original purchase cost," explained Kerry Taylor of fashion auctioneers Kerry Taylor Auctions, which helped set up the special event with eBay.

"Tom Ford believes Daphne to be one of, if not, the most stylish woman living and I would tend to agree."

As well as being an heiress to the Guinness brewing company, the 40-year-old also received a £20 million settlement from her 1999 divorce from the Greek shipping heir Syyros Niarchos. ADNFCR-1460-ID-18574545-ADNFCR

Kitchens and conservatories add value to a property

April 8, 2008 by The Editor

New kitchen can boost a home''s value There are a number of options available to homeowners looking to add to the value of their properties, experts have explained.

According to the Halifax Home Improvement Survey for 2007, 58 per cent of the population undertook some form of home improvement work over the course of the year, an increase of 12 per cent on figures for 2006.

The study also found that more than a quarter of home improvers felt that the work they had put into their property would add at least £5,000 to its value and specialists at the DIY retailer B&Q have suggested that this confidence is well-placed.

"Most home improvements will enhance the resale value of your home, but some are more profitable than others," a spokeswoman the company stated.

"Installing a kitchen, bathroom or conservatory is likely to pay for itself in added market value."

She added that the best results could be seen from replacing outdated bathroom suites and insulating walls and lofts, though homeowners should be wary of ripping out feature pieces such as fireplaces as this can diminish the value of a property. ADNFCR-1460-ID-18542723-ADNFCR

Talk about fast food: Porsche unveils new “man’s kitchen”

February 27, 2008 by The Editor

Porsche goes from cars to kitchens A new kitchen designed by the supercar manufacturer Porsche is set to be released in the UK, with the nation’s males its target audience.

Adhering to the design specifications of its cars, the German firm has revealed that its new “man’s kitchen” will be both flash and functional and is set to offer an antidote to a market dominated by designs aimed at females.

Using the latest design techniques, the kitchen will boast cabinet doors which open at the touch of a finger as well as features such as touch-adjustable lighting and some of the finest materials available.

For £20,000, however, homeowners won’t get any door handles as these have been completely taken out to give a greater sense of space and of “floating” through the room.

The launch of the new kitchen follows on from the recent releases of Porsche’s Sagem mobile phone, which comes with 3G connectivity and a built-in MP3 player, as well as its espresso coffee maker and range of men’s and ladies’ watches.

Fellow luxury car manufacturers Ferrari and Bentley have also put their names on a range of watches. ADNFCR-1460-ID-18486100-ADNFCR

New Delia cookbook set to be a big seller

February 15, 2008 by The Editor

Sales of new Delia book expected to soar TV cookery legend Delia Smith’s new book is hitting the shelves today (Friday) - and retailers have tipped the book to outsell more than the offerings of more contemporary rivals Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver.

How To Cheat At Cooking is Delia’s first new publication in four years and has caused a stir in the literary world, with bookseller Amazon.co.uk tipping it to be one of the biggest sellers of all time.

It is already in Amazon’s best-sellers chart based on pre-orders alone.

“Most interestingly, Delia’s How To Cheat At Cooking has achieved higher pre-order sales on Amazon.co.uk than either Nigella Express or Jamie At Home,” Amy Worth, books manager for the online retailer, said.

“That alone would lead us to believe that it has the potential to be one of the biggest sellers of the year and possibly of all time.”

Meanwhile, Asda has quadrupled its stocks of products which feature in Norwich fan Delia’s book in readiness for an expected sales surge.ADNFCR-1460-ID-18470482-ADNFCR
