New steam washing machine from LG
July 31, 2008 by The Editor
Electronics firm LG has introduced a new washing machine which is the only product on the market to offer a steam clean in a large-capacity unit.
The new machine is also more energy-efficient as it calculates how long the cleaning cycle needs to be from the weight of the load, and how much water is required. The bigger capacity means more clothes can be washed at once, reducing the amount of time spent loading and unloading.
Simona Allan, marketing manager for LG Electronics, told guardian.co.uk: "Capacity is becoming one of the most important factors when choosing a new washer. Today, people naturally want to spend less time doing chores and more time with their families and loved ones. LG’’s new largest capacity steam washer allows them to do just that."
The steam cycle lasts 20 minutes and through reducing water and energy consumption by 35 per cent and 21 per cent respectively, has received an A++ rating for energy efficiency.
In addition to the steam cycle and capacity feature, the machine sports an allergy care programme and an embossed drum, designed to be kind to clothes during the cleaning cycle.

Decline in washing machine sales could lead to money offers
June 26, 2008 by The Editor
High street electrical retailer Comet has experienced a lag in washing machine sales owing to the slump in the housing market.
With house sales slumping and mortgage deals much more difficult to secure, there are fewer new households needing to get the laundry done. The share price of Kesa Electricals, the parent company of Comet, has fallen nearly ten per cent to 157.75 pence, the smallest figure in five years.
Jean-Noel Labroue, Kesa Electricals” chief executive, said: "We are seeing a continuing decline in consumer confidence and we anticipate further difficult trading conditions ahead."
Comet’’s managing director, Hugh Harvey, added: "It’’s a very unstable market and unstable markets are difficult to read."
While the company’’s fortunes are a little better in France, business in Britain is predicted to remain in decline for the next six months at least. In the meantime the reduction in white goods sales, such as washing machines, could create current money offers in a bid to appeal to consumers.
Kesa Electricals is currently considering a share buy-back programme, although further investment in Italian and Spanish subsidiaries are also options.

New eco washing machine in development
June 9, 2008 by The Editor
A new washing machine designed to consume energy and water at a rate of less than two per cent than that of a standard machine, is being developed.
Xeros is being designed at the University of Leeds and could be ready for a commercial launch next year.
The machine’’s cleaning process is initiated using plastic chips. This leaves the clothes dry afterwards, removing the need for a mechanical drying process and so saving energy.
Xeros has recently found a £500,000 investment to help complete the product’’s development and assist with marketing costs as the washing machine is prepared for the market in the coming months.
The firm told Reuters the price was “not expected to be dramatically different from (conventional) washing machines.” As a long-term energy saving device, it could prove a tempting new utility offer.
According to Waterwise, a body focused on curbing water usage, 13 per cent of daily household water consumption feeds the washing machine cleaning cycle, as well as the energy demands of heating the water in the first place. If successful, the Xeros could make a massive contribution to reducing this figure.
According to figures from Xeros, two million washing machines are sold in the UK each year, and usage has gone up by nearly s quarter over the last 15 years.

Homeowners offered new green top-loader
March 17, 2008 by The Editor
Consumers with a green conscience are likely to welcome the launch of a new washing machine which utilises the latest technology to cut back on water wastage.
The new Water Aid Top Load washer from Electrolux is capable of delivering water savings of up to 7,800 litres a year, not only easing the burden on a homeowner’s conscience but also on their wallet.
The new machine offers users the opportunity to adjust the water levels according to the load size or fabric type, something not previously available with top-loading machines and a significant advantage given that industry studies have shown that the average load uses just 50 per cent of a machine’s capacity.
Just recently, the Water Aid Top Load received a host of excellent reviews in Australia, including a four star Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (Wels) rating down under.
British consumers will be able to buy the new machine in eight kilogrammes and 9.5 kilogramme models, though the retail price has yet to be confirmed.

Households urged to embrace efficient washers
February 26, 2008 by The Editor
Consumers have been urged to do more to save water, with new figures showing that the UK uses more of the resource than any other European country despite having less available water per head than most of the continent.
Among the measures suggested by environmental experts are comparing the water efficiency of new washing machines and even cutting back on the often-unnecessary pre-wash cycles.
According to a new report from Ariel, recent heavy rainfall levels and flooding instances have instilled a sense of complacency among Britons when it comes to preserving water.
Jacob Tompkins, Director, Waterwise, said: ‘The past two years has seen the worst droughts and floods for a century in parts of the UK. Although these events give different messages to the public about available water supply and the need to be water efficient, both lead to restrictions on public water supply.
“Climate change means that we will see even more extreme weather in the future. Already, the south-east of England has less available water per person than Sudan and Syria.”
Britons waste more than six million litres of water a year through using pre-wash settings on a washing machine, while around half of all Britons do not put full loads into their washing machines or dryers, the report also revealed.
