New steam washing machine from LG
July 31, 2008 by The Editor
Electronics firm LG has introduced a new washing machine which is the only product on the market to offer a steam clean in a large-capacity unit.
The new machine is also more energy-efficient as it calculates how long the cleaning cycle needs to be from the weight of the load, and how much water is required. The bigger capacity means more clothes can be washed at once, reducing the amount of time spent loading and unloading.
Simona Allan, marketing manager for LG Electronics, told guardian.co.uk: "Capacity is becoming one of the most important factors when choosing a new washer. Today, people naturally want to spend less time doing chores and more time with their families and loved ones. LG’’s new largest capacity steam washer allows them to do just that."
The steam cycle lasts 20 minutes and through reducing water and energy consumption by 35 per cent and 21 per cent respectively, has received an A++ rating for energy efficiency.
In addition to the steam cycle and capacity feature, the machine sports an allergy care programme and an embossed drum, designed to be kind to clothes during the cleaning cycle.

British Gas introduces substantial price rise
July 31, 2008 by The Editor
British Gas, the biggest energy utility in the UK, has announced substantial price rises, in response to the soaring cost of wholesale energy.
The price of gas has climbed 35 per cent, while the price of electricity has gone up by nine per cent, both applicable with immediate effect. The utility, owned by parent company Centrica, has attempted to reassure customers by insisting it will be the last increase of this year.
Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas, said: "We very much regret that we have had to make this decision at a time when many household budgets are already under pressure."
British Gas customers will now find themselves paying about £1,240 each year on the company’’s dual fuel tariff.
The utility says that, come winter, the cost of wholesale energy will have soared by almost 90 per cent, and the firm is unable to absorb these rises without passing some of the cost to consumers.
British Gas has become the second utility in a week to announce price rises, although the 35 per cent figure is considerably steeper than the numbers announced by EDF last Friday. The other major suppliers are expected to follow suit over the coming weeks.

Defra adds £5 million to assistance packages for flood victims
July 31, 2008 by The Editor
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will contribute £5 million to assistance packages for households affected by flooding.
Local authorities are already working with insurance companies to ensure that households at particular risk from flooding are given added protection from future flood-damage. The assistance package is designed to help households who are at risk from damage that stretches the limits of traditional home insurance policies.
Environment minister Phil Woolas said: "Putting a package of measures in place can cost £4,000 to £5,000 for the average semi-detached house, but it could prevent flood damage of up to tens of thousands of pounds, as well as the attendant distress and disruption that flooding can cause."
Over 180,000 insurance claims were made as a result of widespread flooding last year, putting both the government and the insurance industry under pressure to provide special assistance to affected households. Government funding now amounts to over £130 million.
Homeowners living in high-risk areas unprotected by community flood defences will be covered by the assistance packages, although customers are advised to seek the best new insurance deals as well.

A new 130 gram digital camera released in the autumn will be cheaply priced and ideal for group photos.
The M60 is designed with photography amateurs in mind and will be sold in the high street for under £100. According to cnet.co.uk, one of its best selling points is a highly developed face-recognition feature that facilitates group shots of up to 32 people.
The face-recognition is backed up with smile and blink detection software that selects the best lighting to enhance a subject’’s smile. There’’s also a 5x optical zoom for good measure.
The 10-megapixel camera will also sport a "High Speed Series Picture Shooter", enabling a capture rate of four photos a second.
Following on from the M60 will be the E60, a similarly sized camera that will help the most inexperienced photographer with a fully automatic capturing mode and the capability to retrieve photos that might have been accidentally deleted. This model will be battery-powered, catering for those who like their energy sources traditional.
The M60 is expected to be on sale from next month, with the E60 to be seen shortly afterwards. They are both expected to sell for under £100.

Web TV sites to be linked by search specialist
July 30, 2008 by The Editor
Search specialist Blinkx has launched a new video search engine for the web that will group together the main TV catch-up services that are free to view.
The service, named "Blinkx Remote", will index the content of free online catch-up forums such as ITV.com, BBC iPlayer, Demand Five and 4OD. The site will avoid having to negotiate partnerships with broadcasters by using programme data that is publicly available.
Suranga Chandratillake, the Blinkx chief executive, told Jemima Kiss at guardian.co.uk: "We constantly monitor video on the web to see what content people are finding and indexing, and what content people are looking for on a daily basis. One trend we spotted in both the UK and US is the growth of free online, full-length TV shows."
The service allows access to around 1,000 British TV shows from all the main catch-up services, and up to 400 from America, lifted mainly from the Hulu service, America’’s iPlayer equivalent.
The service may well plug a gap in the market, allowing web users to visit a single site and access listings for all the main catch-up services, rather than having to visit each site individually.

Tesco presents new car breakdown insurance offer
July 30, 2008 by The Editor
Tesco is offering motorists a 30 per cent discount on its car breakdown policy when customers buy it online.
The insurer offers three separate breakdown cover policies, Standard Care, Extra Care and Total Care, all of which include roadside help and towing to the nearest garage. Add-on packages, like transport home from within the UK, or a hire car, are also available. For £31.50, motorists can also buy eight-day breakdown coverage for travel on the continent.
Allan Burns, head of general insurance at Tesco, said: "With the August bank holiday approaching, now is a great time for families to arrange breakdown cover to ensure their trips go according to plan. The 30 per cent online discount will also help them save money which can be put towards other enjoyable outings."
The new offer will appeal to drivers taking their vehicles overseas, as breakdown on foreign soil can be a particularly stressful experience and can come to dominate the holiday. Tesco also covers the car as opposed to the driver, so the coverage extends to anyone driving with the owner’’s permission.
Holidaymakers looking for insurance offers that span periods longer than eight days are advised to shop around for the cheapest prices.

Toshiba releases details of new camcorder
July 29, 2008 by The Editor
Japanese electronics giant Toshiba has released details of its new digital camcorder, the Camileo H10.
The compact device weighs in at 340 grams and is an SD-based High Definition machine. The new camcorder marks a broadening of Toshiba’’s product line, as it is best known as a laptop producer. It is sure to make a mark, however, with a small and compact device that should facilitate steady filming.
A 1,280×720 pixel resolution filming capability utilises the HD feature, while both digital and optical zooms are available to the user.
Film files are saved as MPEG4 files, so viewing platforms encompass most electronic devices, unlike DVD-based machines which are more technically restrictive.
The camera also features a 2.7-inch LCD display, a 10-megapixel Flash-incorporated camera, enabling stills capture as well as the motion-picture function, in addition to motion-sensor functionality, image stabilisation and an infrared mode.
The new device is expected to retail for about £180, and while this makes it more expensive than some competitors that offer more features, in nevertheless offers an intriguing mid-range product to those searching for a cheaper filmmaking option.

Cheap mobile phone retailer Phones4u will sell new mobile broadband accessories in hundreds of stores, as the result of a deal with BrightStar Europe.
The agreement will broaden the phone company’’s product base with the intention of attracting more subscribers. Customers will be able to purchase the latest mobile broadband technology from high street stores, enabling Phones 4u to gain a bigger slice of the market and remain competitive.
Jim Slater, Phones 4u marketing director, told broadbandgenie.co.uk: "The agreement with Brightstar Europe gives Phones 4u direct access to the full range of laptop PCs and accessories from all the leading brand manufacturers, including HP, Toshiba, Sony and Acer."
Phone 4u has been responsible for one of the quirkier TV advertising campaigns over recent years, but branching into mobile broadband will ensure its commercial reach remains extended.
Brightstar Europe praised the forward-thinking attitude displayed by Phones 4u in broadening its product range to include wireless technology.
The majority of UK homes now have a wireless network, and although a minority of web users are looking for access outside the home, the demand is predicted to spread rapidly.

Cheap travel insurance available for Beijing Olympics
July 29, 2008 by The Editor
Travel insurance for those going to the Olympic Games in Beijing is available for as little as £13, according to comparison website moneysupermarket.com.
Nearly 15 per cent of British holidaymakers still opt to travel overseas without any insurance, despite the fact that £3 million of medical coverage is available from some insurers from a premium of less than £20.
Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com said: "Some people may not take out insurance because they are concerned about the cost; however, with worldwide insurance costing less than a souvenir t-shirt there is really no excuse to travel without cover."
The website lists five different insurers who currently offer good deals that can be taken advantage of by people making the trip to Beijing this summer. Flexicover Direct and Top Dog both offer £10 million of medical coverage for less than £15.
Holidaymakers are advised not to risk travelling long distances overseas without adequate coverage, especially when there are plenty of policies to suit all budgets.
Intense competition has resulted in some outstanding offers, and consumers who set aside some time to shop around will find both peace of mind and great new deals.

New touchscreen Nokia phone images leaked
July 28, 2008 by The Editor
Images of Nokia’’s new touchscreen phone, a device which will perhaps be intended to compete with the iPhone when it is eventually released, are available online.
The 104-gram device has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, 640×360 screen resolution and 16 million colours. Users will also be treated to a minute haptic feedback buzz whenever they press a button on the screen.
According to Amy-Mae Elliott at pocket-lint.co.uk, Nokia said: "Our first touch device will be aimed solidly at the ”mid-range” or ”volume” part of the market. This device will be competitively spec-ed - especially considering the price point and will be announced in a few months."
A 3.2 megapixel camera, superior to the iPhone, will also feature auto focus, a dual LED flash, and Carl Zeiss options.
The iPhone dominates the touchscreen market and recently spawned a new model, but superior features from Nokia, together with rumours that Apple may be ditching O2 for Orange as its European partner, could open up the market for Nokia.
Nokia have mentioned the issue of competitive pricing as well, which will be a crucial factor in a market constantly under pressure to undercut rival products and firms.

New search engine explores ”much more” of the web
July 28, 2008 by The Editor
Engineers with backgrounds at Google and IBM have created a new search engine which could introduce serious competition to the market.
The engine, dubbed "Cuil" and pronounced "Cool" indexes 120 billion web pages and, it is claimed, searches them faster and more effectively than Google. If proven effective, the engine could open up the internet search engine market that Google has dominated for several years.
Tom Costello, co-founder and chief executive of Cuil, said in a statement: "Our significant breakthroughs in search technology have enabled us to index much more of the internet, placing nearly the entire web at the fingertips of every user."
The new technology allows web users to develop a short list of sorts from an initial search and then to hone in on more specific details.
Google has recently been attempting to expand its already substantial influence on the internet by merging with rival Yahoo!, but its attempts have so far proved fruitless.
With web access predicted to surge around the world over the next five years, Cuil may have a serious opportunity to challenge Google’’s market supremacy with more precise, next-generation technology.

Motor insurance offer from NFU
July 28, 2008 by The Editor
As the summer holiday season commences, insurance company NFU Mutual is pushing its car insurance offer for families taking their vehicle overseas.
The company offers full year-round motor insurance cover in 34 countries across Europe, plus restricted cover in an additional 11 countries. The offer is designed for holidaying families who may not enjoy full foreign coverage on existing policies.
Laura Wood from NFU Mutual comments: "NFU Mutual’’s standard car policy automatically insures policyholders whilst driving in Europe for 365 days a year. This offers real peace of mind and means that you can tour the continent safe in the knowledge that you are insured."
The policy from NFU is designed to compete with policies that may only offer limited days abroad as opposed to year-long cover regardless of how much of that is spent overseas.
Car insurance is particularly important for taking vehicles overseas, as differences in road travel can heighten motorists” susceptibility to road accidents. Drivers should also ensure they have all the equipment required by foreign governments in the event of a breakdown.
Motorists are advised to shop around and contrast and compare in order to secure the best insurance deals.

Virgin Media plans 200 Mbps connection speeds
July 27, 2008 by The Editor
Cheap broadband provider Virgin Media has announced new plans to deliver connection speeds of 200 Mbps within the next four years.
The company already provides fibre-optic technology to some of its subscribers, and the announcement comes in the same week that BT has released details of its plans for a £1.5 billion fibre roll-out. Virgin’’s plan, however, would double BT’’s targeted speed of 100 Mbps, and would facilitate faster downloads and HD TV.
Howard Wilson, chief technology officer at Virgin Media, told Kate Holton at Reuters: "We are setting ourselves a vision of households using 200 Mbps by 2012. The current technology that we”re investing in to roll out the 50 Mbps over the next 12 months has inherent within it that extra capability."
Online downloads, video streaming, interactive gaming and teleconferencing would all be made possible with connection speeds of that magnitude, while industry experts also argue that Britain needs a next-generation broadband infrastructure to maintain a competitive economic edge in the global community.
The average connection speed in the UK at the moment is only 4 Mbps, and the country lags behind countries like South Korea and Japan where dense urban populations have prompted government spending on more efficient infrastructure.
